PURPOSE:To manufacture porous glass starting material in a high yield by hydrolyzing the halide of a positive element by reaction with pure water and drying the resulting glass forming oxide with a high frequency heater. CONSTITUTION:The halide of a positive element such as P, Ga, Si or Ge is hydrolyzed by reaction with pure water in a reactor, and the resulting hydrogen halide and unreacted water are evaporated to obtain pasty glass forming oxide 1. Container 2 filled with oxide 1 is mounted on container setting stand 3, and electrode 4 for applying high frequency voltage is placed opposite to stand 3. By applying high frequency power between electrode 4 and stand 3 from high frequency power source 5, water in container 2 is evaporated to dry oxide 1, and the resulting porous glass forming oxide is taken out. |
