In order to achieve enhanced error detection during bit-oriented data transmission using an HDLC protocol, the invention proposes that a block-length indication (BL) included in a tuple-coded information field (IF) be included in duplicate, the two block-length indications being differently coded so that, when the block length is changed by the value 1 in a given number of tuples, at least three bits are changed together. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, only the least significant tuple is transmitted from one of the block-length indications.
