Breaking up deposit in internal bodily cavity - using piezoelectric crystal attached to wire threaded through catheter

The instrument consists of a catheter (4) which has an opening in its wall. A long wire (31) is threaded through the catheter so that its front end projects beyond the inner end of the catheter. The inner end of the catheter is fitted with ultro-sonic generators (6) consisting of piezo-electric crystal which converts high frequency electric currents into ultrasonic waves. An electric cable is connected to the crystal and the cable extends back through the catheter to a high frequency current generator (23). USE/ADVANTAGE - Removal of thromboses without risk of causing injury to other parts of the body.
