The cordless telephone handset has a base station (20) and a removable handpiece (10), each of which incorporates a microprocessor (23, 13). The operating voltage for the handpiece circuit is provided by a battery (15) with an associated battery charge monitor (14). The latter provdes a signal via the microprocessor (13) when the battery charge falls below a given value. The battery (15) can then be replaced by a rechargeable reserve battery (29) within the base station (20). The field intensity interruption caused by replacement of the battery during a conversation is detectd,fand detected, and the microporcessor (23) within the base station (20) separates the link between the latter and the handpiece (10) after a given internval. The connection is maintained and the link restored after insertion of the replacement battery.
