PRODUCTION OF 99OCTADECENEDIOIC ACID DIESTER

PURPOSE:A triglyceride is subjected to olefin metathesis, then treated with an alcoholate to produce the titled compound important as a synthetic intermediate of civetone, a musk perfume, inexpensively in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A triglyceride containing oleic, linolic and linolenic acids as main fatty acid components is subjected to olefin metathesis in the presence of a catalyst composed of tungsten hexachloride and tetraalkyltin in a solvent such as benzene at 80-120 deg.C for 2-3hr. Then, an alcoholic alkali metal alcoholate is added and they are heated under reflux for 40-60min to produce the titled compound. The raw materials are readily available and inexpensive and the catalyst used in the olefin metathesis is low in toxicity and high in activity.
