The anvil is for a clamping shoe to hold a workpiece or for a datum surface with a grid of holes or slots on which a holder column can be locked in various positions. The cylindrical column (13) has a number of ring grooves (15, 16) in its outer surface in which two ring segments (18, 19) with projecting tongues (17) can grip to form the anvil. The two ring segments may be held together by bolts to enable them to be removed or re-fitted. There is a top clamp (1) which is held down by a vertical bolt (37). The lower clamp element formed in one of the rings holds a removable bolt or element (34). USE/ADVANTAGE - Height adjustment of the anvil in various fixed distances from the datum surface is assured.
