The convex surfaces of workpieces, partic. the flanks of hardened gear teeth, are finished by a tool in the shape of a gear wheel, or a toothed rack. The flanks of the teeth of the tool are coated with an abrasive material such as CBN or diamond dust. The axis of the tool (T) intersects the axis of the workpiece (W), and the tool moves reiprocally w.r.t. the workpiece in a given direction (X), without a simultaneous movement w.r.t. the tooth depth, but with a tipping motion about an axis, which is approx. tangential to the rolling circle of the tool and is also perpendicular to the common normal (N) and to the workpiece axis (4).
