The belt type grinding machine has a frame (27) with turn round pulleys (21) for the grinding belt (51) mounted at each end. The machine is attached to a machine tool and the machine tool spindle is coupled to the shaft (7) which carries a driving pulley for an endless toothed belt (32). The toothed belt drives a pulley mounted on the same shaft as one of the turn round pulleys (21) for the grinding belt. One or both of the turn round pulley can be positionally adjusted in the axial direction of the grinding belt (51) in order to adjust the tension of the grinding belt. This use of a separate belt to drive the machine enables a more flexible grinding belt to be used which can accommodate itself to the contour of the workpiece being ground.
