A suction muffler for a hermetic compressor comprises a hollow muffler body 100 formed from a lower part 110 having a peripheral edge and an upper part 120 having a peripheral undercut 127, which is seated on the peripheral edge of the lower part, and a peripheral skirt 128 which allows oil to run off rather than seep into the muffler assembly. The upper part carries a gas outlet opening 121 which communicates with the inlet of the compressor. The muffler body is split into two chambers 100a, 100b by a divider 115. A flow pipe 130 within the muffler connects the gas inlet opening 130a to the gas outlet opening 121, the flow pipe having slots (131, 132, Figs. 5 and 6), each slot communicating with a respective one of the chambers 100a, 100b. The upper and lower parts of the muffler body are held together by metallic clips 150. <IMAGE>
