Deuterium-poor hydrogen from the cold column of the hot and cold column concentration system of the parent Specification is further depleted in D by passage in sequence through a further cold column and hot column forming a stripping system, while water passes in countercurrent first through the hot column then through the cold, and part of the hydrogen from the cold column of the stripping system is withdrawn for use in, say, hydrogenation, while the remainder has the D content increased to that of "natural" hydrogen in the stripping hot column before recycle to the hot column of the concentration system. Fresh H2 is added to the circulation to make up for that withdrawn. The parent Specification discloses a process for the production of D-enriched H2O or H2 by passing H2 and liquid H2O in countercurrent at elevated pressure in the presence of a catalyst in sequence through two columns maintained at different temperatures forming a concentration system. One-third of the D-rich H2 leaving the concentration hot column may be passed to a second hot and cold column concentration system for further enrichment, whence D-poor H2 is returned to the concentration cold column. The water circulations of the concentration and stripping systems may be combined into a single closed circulation. Heat exchange may be provided between the liquid and gas at different temperatures, preferably in like phases. The catalyst may be a dispersion, or colloidal solution, in the liquid phase. The corresponding columns of the stripping and concentration systems may be at the same temperature and pressure.
|
