The gear lever (1) can be moved along a fore-and-aft preselection slot (2) or through a central transverse gate into a parallel slot in a cover (13). The lever is coupled to a universal joint mechanism (18) and can be pivoted about its two orthogonal bearings (19,20). Park, reverse, neutral, drive and three lower gear ratios are selected by pivoting about the upper bearing (19) through angles of 34.6 deg. forward and 28.2 deg. rearward, moving an actuator rod (22) which is coupled to the transmission. Pivoting through the gate takes place about the lower bearing (20).
