A broiler cartridge for cooking food on a cooktop (Fig. 1) includes a heating element (26') in a lower pan (24') adapted to be located within a cooktopf rame (12) mounted in a counter (10). An upper pan (28') is inserted into the lower pan (24') over the heating element (26'). The heating element (26') can be used to warm the upper pan (28). To operate as a broiler, a special cover (82) containing a heating element (90) supported by a serpentine parabolic reflector (86) is placed over an adjustable food rack (80) located within the upper pan (28'). The element (90) has a connector block (92) with a jack (92a) that is received in a power input block (94) built into the lower pan (24'). The heating element (26') is also electrically connected to the block (94).
