A method of processing tonal (gray scale) image data uses spatial filtering to emphasize the contour and to eliminate noise. Unit spatial filters having a relatively small area of about 3 x 3 pixels are used and arranged arbitrarily in the portion requiring the image processing, to construct a spatial filter having a predetermined shape. Each of the unit spatial filters of small area, contained in the spatial filter thus constructed, is subjected to the image processing, and the output results are shifted and added, whereby to obtain the output result of the spatial filter as a whole. The present method can also be applied to the template matching technique. The result is a reduction in the size of the processor needed, or a shortening of the time required for processing, or both. |
