A filter element is secured in the housing of an air filter in particular for an internal-combustion, being inserted through a lateral open- and held by friction using a clamping mechanism. Between the element and the housing are two oblong parallel clamping members hinging in the housing. These move past an extended position into an over-centre one to clamp the insert in place, bearing against the housing in the lateral direction. Each member can comprise two toggle levers hinging on the housing and a clamping frame. Alternatively, they can consist of leaf springs hinging on frame and housing.
