PURPOSE: To achieve a maximization of cross diffusion of a gas between blood stream of a patient and an oxygenator by minimizing the streaming of the blood stream with expansion or contraction. CONSTITUTION: An oxygenator 10 is constituted of an expandable balloon 20 and a gas path 14 comprising numerous gas permeable hollow polypropylene fibers substantially surrounding the balloon. A fiber loop 14 and the balloon 20 are connected to a connector 12. An external pump 21 is connected to an internal cavity 22 of the connector 12 to repeatedly expand or contract the balloon 20. A supply means of a gas containing oxygen is connected to the internal cavity 15 of the connector 12. Oxygen flows into the fiber 14 through the internal cavity 15 and is diffused through a gas permeable wall to enter into the fiber. Carbon dioxide and all of the residual oxygen in the fiber are discharged into the atmospheric air through an internal cavity 16 where a negative pressure is applied by a suction pump 19 of the connector 12. The balloon 20 and the fiber 14 of the oxygenator can be transplanted into a vein system of a patient through a single small excision part.
