A rechargeable battery is provided with output terminals at opposite ends, a separate pair of terminals being provided for charging the battery which includes a rectifier and circuit in its casing. Provision is made for isolating the output terminals while the battery is being charged. Fig. 1 shows four cells 7, 8, 9, 10 joined in series-parallel and enclosed with a rectifier unit 6 in a casing the walls of which are grooved to accommodate the leads of the circuit which is shown in Fig. 2. The charging terminals 20, 21 are shaped to engage the contacts of a conventional lamp holder, the end 24 of the casing being provided with bayonet pins for engagement with the holder. The normal terminals consist of a plate 13 and a socket 18 which is below the level of the face of the end 24 of the case. When the battery is in normal use an insulating cap 28 carrying a pin terminal 30 is fitted over the end 24, the pin 30 entering the socket 18. When the battery is to be charged the cap 28 is removed and placed over the end 25 of the case, the pin 30 entering an opening 15 and the terminal 13 being covered by the cap. The terminal 13 has a central opening 14 which is sufficiently large to prevent the pin 30 from making contact with the terminal. In a modification the pin 30, socket 18 and opening 15 are screw-threaded. In a further modification the cap 28 is replaced by an insulating plate 54,. Fig. 4, which carries a threaded terminal pin consisting of two parts 55, 56 separated by insulation 57. The socket in the top of the battery casing is divided into three parts 59, 60, 61 in the form of rings joined respectively to the rectifying circuit at the points 40, 42 and the terminal 13. When the battery is to be charged the plate 54 is removed and the terminal 13 is thus isolated from the charging circuit. When the plate is screwed into the socket, the part 56 of the output terminal connects the the parts 60, 61 and thus connects the terminal 13 to the point 42 of the circuit, while the point 40 makes contact with the part 55 and the output terminal. Other modifications are described in which the rings 60, 61 are replaced by leaf springs.
