<p>A method of providing a composite material, such as a metal matrix composite (3), on a metal substrate (2). The method comprises applying the materials making up the composite (3), either as a mixture or preformed, under pressure on the substrate (2) and passing an electric current through the materials to cause joule heating, whereby the composite is joined to the substrate.
