METHOD FOR BONDING LUBRICANT TO THIN-FILM STORAGE MEDIUM

PURPOSE: To join a lubricating film onto the surface of a thin-film recording medium by applying a specified compsn. onto the surface of the recording medium and exposing the coated surface to an electron beam after application of the compsn., thereby joining the compsn. onto the recording medium. CONSTITUTION: A lubricant is applied by spin coating on the surface of a sample 60 consisting of a magnetic memory disk having a carbon base protective layer. The compsn. which is a material selected from a group consisting of hydrocarbon, fluorocarbon and fatty acid is used for the lubricant. A sample 60 coated with the lubricant is supported on a sample holder 70 by arranging the sample within a vacuum chamber 40. This vacuum chamber 40 is evacuated by a vacuum pump 30. A filament power source 10 supplies an electric current to a filament 50. This sample 60 is exposed to the electron beam having energy below about 100 electron volts radiated from the filament 50. As a result, the lubricant applied on the surface of the sample 60 is joined onto the magnetic memory disk.
