The voltage measured by electrodes is multiplied by the cross section of the channel. Several electromagnets are lowered to determine heights over the base of the channel. The voltages resulting in the magnetic field of these electromagnets is measured continuously or at determined intervals, individually stored and multiplied with the width and the height and added. The final amounts identify the flow amounts. The individually stored voltages are compared at determined intervals with each other, and deviations are identified as alterations at the surface of the channel. The method uses an electromagnet running from wall to wall, with electrodes arranged near the poles of the electromagnet(s) and an electronic circuit for multiplying the voltage measured by the electrodes. Several electromagnets (22,24,26) have electrodes (38,40) assigned to them and the electrodes are connected to the electronic circuit. ADVANTAGE - Rate of flow can be exactly determined. Alterations at surface of channel due to deposits, shifts and stones can be identified.
