<p>A brake assembly for a rotatable wheel in which the rim (21) of the wheel has an integrally formed lip (22) extending from the side thereof and forming a trough (38). A Kevlar (TM) jacketed cable (24, 34), positioned in the trough (38), encircles the lip (22) in the direction of rotation of the wheel. The cable (24) is affixed to the frame (12) at one end and to an operating lever (26) at the other end. Moving the lever (26) tensions the cable (24) and applies a frictional load to the trough (38) to brake the wheel. In a second embodiment, a pair of opposed lips (52, 54), one on either side of the rim (50), increases the braking effect.</p> |
