Drive unit for a wheel chair comprising drive pulleys 1 for contact with the wheels 2 of the wheel chair, a worm gear 3 driving these wheels, and a motor driving the worm gear, as well as a battery 6 which powers the motor. The drive unit is suspended 4 on the wheel chair at a point in front of the centre of gravity of the drive unit, and the weight of the drive unit holds the drive pulleys in contact with the wheels immediately behind the backrest of the wheel chair. Attached to the drive unit there is a handle 7 which is parallel to the actual wheel chair handle and which has the manoeuvring members for the drive unit motor. If the handle is pushed forwards, the drive unit pivots about its point of suspension and the drive pulleys are lifted from the wheels, and the wheel chair can therefore be pushed freely forwards without the action of the drive unit. When the handle is released again, the drive unit drops back and can be used for driving or braking the wheel chair or for keeping it stationary. The whole drive unit functions as a dead man's handle, and of course the manoeuvring members for its motor are also preferably designed in a similar manner so that the wheel chair cannot move forward by itself. <IMAGE> |
