A metal article is coated with a laminated protective coating having an inner anti-corrosive layer, an inert mineral layer affixed to the anti-corrosive layer by an interposed adhesive layer, and an outer finish layer, the inner, adhesive, and outer layers being derived from a liquid polymer of a conjugated diolefine containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms, or a copolymer thereof with a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon. The polymers may be dissolved in a solvent and blown with oxygen before applying in solution or as a latex by brush, felt, roller, or spray and may subsequently be cured by an open flame. The inert layer may be of sand. In an example, a copolymer of butadiene-1 : 3 and styrene, prepared by solution polymerization in the presence of a finely divided alkali metal catalyst such as sodium and a hydrocarbon solvent, was dissolved in an aromatic hydrocarbon and blown with air; two coats of the solution were applied to a metal pipe, followed by two coats of sign-painter's black sand, and two further coats of the polymer, each coat being cured by a ribbon burner flame. |
