The method seals off openings in fireproof building walls or ceilings etc., using fireproof pads which are removable after insertion. The pads (12) are inserted in the wall etc. at the time the openings are formed. Where the soffit of the opening is formed by a metal frame, this can be installed complete with pads in the opening at the time of formation. The pads can comprise a non-inflammable casing of woven glass fibre, and a filling of non-inflammable mineral wool in the form of a single rectangular block.
