A flat, punched sheet-metal electrical retention system 32 formed in one piece for coupling with a flat electrical tongue 30 is provided with a baseplate 40 from which a first, second and third contact spring 46, 48, 50 project uprightly. The first contact spring 46 has a contact stud 56 provided with a contact surface 58 close to the coupling axis X1 of the tongue 30. The second contact spring 48 has a contact stud 60 provided with a contact surface 62 located close to the coupling axis X1 and below the contact surface 58 of the first contact spring 46. The third contact spring 50 has a contact stud 66 provided with a contact surface 58 close to the coupling axis X1 and below the contact surface 62 of the stud 60 of the second contact spring 48. The contact surfaces 58, 62 and 68 of the contact springs 46, 48, 50 can readily be plated, since these contact surfaces are not located close to one another. Moreover, it is possible for the multiple contact surfaces to exert a suitable contact force on a relatively thin tongue, and the contact springs 46, 48, 50 can be of such dimensions that the contact force exerted by the second contact spring 48 on one side of the tongue 30 is equal to the sum of the contact forces exerted by the first and third contact spring 46 and 50 on the other side of the tongue 30. <IMAGE>
