<p>A tunnel boring machine (10) having increased thrust capability is disclosed. The machine includes a rotatable cutter head (14) for cutting material away from the face of the tunnel and a drive shaft (38) and motor (32) for rotating the cutter head (14) in a cutting state of operation. A bearing assembly is also provided for facilitating rotation of the cutter head (14) during the cutting state of operation. Thrust cylinders (34, 36) are also provided for generating forward thrust. The machine also includes first and second structures (70, 44) for defining a fluid pressurizable cavity (80) between the cutter head (14) and the thrust cylinders (34, 36) which transmit forward thrust to the cutter head (14) when the cavity (80) is sufficiently pressurized. In addition, the machine includes a pressurizing system for pressurizing the cavity (80).</p> |
