The invention relates to a process for applying a coating to a substrate using a plasma burner, a coating applied thereby and a plasma burner designed and suitable therefor. The coating consists of a matrix as the useful layer and the incorporation of diamond particles to improve the matrix properties or of a matrix of binder material with particles bound therein which then form the actual useful coating. The various concentrations of diamond or matrix material in the coating can be selected dependently upon the selected parameters in coating, primarily the dependence on the distance of the substrate from the plasma burner and the addition of carbide formers to the plasma burner.
