PURPOSE:To carry out the surface-treatment of a carbon fiber without causing the lowering of strength and to obtain a carbon fiber suitable as aggregate for composite material by subjecting a carbon fiber bundle to electrolytic oxidation in a magnetic field using the fiber bundle as an anode. CONSTITUTION:An anode comprising a carbon fiber bundle 1 is passed through a terminal 2 for in putting anodic current. The anode and a cathode 3 consisting of a platinum plate and positioned opposite to the anode are placed in an electrolytic cell 5 containing an electrolytic solution such as an aqueous solution of an acid, an alkali or a salt. Both electrodes 1, 3 are sandwiched with magnets 6, 6 to form a magnetic field of 1,200 gauss between the electrodes and the fiber bundle is subjected to electrolytic oxidation treatment at an electrolytic voltage of >=2V and a feeding electricity of >=10 coulomb per 1g of the carbon fiber. The treated carbon fiber is thoroughly washed with water and dried to afford the objective surface-oxidized carbon fiber. |
