A trench for the foundation of a wall is excavated by a machine which drives two endless cutter chains (8) which are mounted side-by-side. The wall is formed by concrete piles (1) which are fastened to each other by vertical tongue and groove joints. The endless chains are equipped with buckets to remove soil from the end wall of the trench. The chains are supported by a steel shaft (6) which shores the trench walls until the concrete piles are put in place. The steel shaft is supported from the end pile by a device with parallel steel plates which can be expanded by a worm drive. ADVANTAGE - Improved reliability and shoring of the slit wall.
