There is disclosed a method of inhibiting the corrosion of metal parts in contact with an aqueous medium by providing a protective passive oxide film on the metallic surface in contact with the aqueous medium by ensuring that the pH of the aqueous medium is 5.5 or above, ensuring that the aqueous medium contains a calcium or other appropriate ion concentration and adding to the medium a water soluble polymer and a water-soluble orthophosphate or precursor thereof. There are also disclosed compositions which may be used in the above process comprising the water-soluble polymer and the orthophosphate or precursor. The method and composition for use in the treatment of industrial water systems e.g., cooling water systems.
