PURPOSE:To produce an inexpensive and high strength metal matrix composite excellent in thermal stability by subjecting a sintered compact, containing high grade potassium hexatitanate with specific impurity content and tunnel structure, and a light metal to high pressure casting. CONSTITUTION:A sintered compact containing high grade potassium hexatitanate whiskers, in which impurity content is regulated to <=0.3wt.%, preferably, Nb as an impurity is regulated to <=0.1% (expressed in terms of Nb2O5) and which has tunnel structure is used, and this sintered compact is subjected, together with a light metal, such as aluminum alloy, to high pressure casting. The above sintered compact as a preformed body can be obtained by adding an organic binder to a reinforcement containing potassium titanate whiskers, mixing them, and subjecting the resulting mixture to molding and then to sintering at about 800-1000 deg.C. Further, the suitable blending percentage of the high grade potassium hexatitanate whiskers at the time of casting is about 5-40% by volume. By this method, the inexpensive composite material excellent in mechanical strength can be obtained. |
