In order to give identical lengths to the various strands (4) constituting a stay cable, a first "control" strand is put in place by unwinding from a roll (5), so as to extend obliquely between a raised point A and a low point B near to the roller, with a low tension; the relative level HO, with respect to the level of the point B, of a point M on the said strand is measured, which point M is situated at a given horizontal distance from the point B; the end of the said strand, located next to the roller, is cut at a well-determined point C close to the point B; then successive unwound strands are tensioned turn by turn between the two points A and B until the relative level of the point M corresponding to each of the strands is equal to the value HO of the point M of the control strand; and these successive strands are cut in turn at the point C when the above equality is satisfied.
