A fence assembly (1) comprises stanchions (2) supporting panels (3). Each panel (3) comprises a panel member (5) of expanded metal mesh material with horizontal reinforcing members (16) coupled thereto. The reinforcing members (16) are coupled by coupling members which are formed by bending alternate portions (15) of the panel member (5) outwardly of opposite side faces (6) and (7) of the panel member (5). The coupling members (18) form engagement openings (20) for receiving the reinforcing members (16). Clamping screws (30) secure overlapping reinforcing members (16) of adjacent panels (3) to mounting brackets (28) which are in turn clamped to the stanchions (2) by the clamping screws (30). <IMAGE>
