An apparatus for dispensing measured quantities of a molten substance used in the manufacture of, for example, lipsticks, comprises an open-ended measuring chamber 20, the ends of which are closed alternately by means of closure members 24, 32 coupled together by means of a common actuating rod 30. The measuring chamber 20 communicates, at its top end, with a container 10 for the molten substance and, at its lower end, with a container 36 having a spout 42 for directing the substance into a mould C. The rod 30 is connected to an operating lever 50 via a pin engaging between two collars 46, the rod being provided with a knob 52 so that, upon rotation thereof, the degree of penetration of the closure member 32 into the chamber is altered, thereby varying its capacity; the rod is prevented from rotating by means of pin 26 in the closure member 24 engaging with a slot 26a in the chamber. The container 10 is surrounded by a water container 12, the temperature of the water being controlled by means of heating mechanism 14 so that the viscosity of the substance is thereby controlled. The lever 50 is connected to a ratchet device 60, 64 adapted to move moulds C intermittently under the spout 42 and then through a cooling device D, the moulds finally being moved under a closure device F, Fig. 2 (not shown), which presses caps G over the open ends of the moulds. The caps are located in a hopper 70 and fall down a guide sleeve 74, resiliently mounted dogs 76 being provided to prevent the caps moving back into the hopper. The sleeve is reciprocated by means of a lever mechanism 78, 80, 82 connected to the drive of the lever 50.
