A device for removing coarse impurities from liqs. consists of a filter surface or grating (14) which is continuously cleaned by a moving cleaning system (17,18), the filter surface is spherical in shape and has a dia. D1 and height H such that the ratio H/D1 is between 0.15 and 0.35. The filter surface is fitted to the outlet flange (6) of the device, and its dia. D1 corresponds to the inner dia. D2 of this flange. The inner dia. D3 of the housing (4) is 1.1 to 1.3 times that of the filter surface. The filter surface normally consists of a perforated plate, and has a flat outer edge section (15) which is held between the outlet flange of the device and the inlet flange (3a) of the connecting pipework (3). The inner edge (16) of the outlet flange is tapered to an angle corresponding to the edge angel of the spherical section of the filter surface. The housing maybe cylindrical or conical in shape. The suction element of the cleaning device moves back and forth across the filter surface, and at the end of its travel its ends extend beyond the filter surface and are covered by the inner surface of the housing. The cleaning device can move through a full 360 degs. and is mounted on a pipe which at one end passes through the housing wall and provides and outlet point, and at the other is connected to a drive shaft which also passes through the housing wall. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used. esp. for remvoing large particles from cooling water at the inlets to heat exchangers. The device is simple and economical and provides a more rigid and vibration-free filter surface, a better flow geometry for the liq. being filtered, a better and less complex attachment of the filter surface to the housing, and a simple and compact housing.
