The walls of a freezing tank are protected from damage as the liquid expands during freezing by flexible liquid impermeable membranes 8 spaced from the walls, the spaces between membrane and wall being occupied by cushioning means. The latter may comprise pads of resilient material or a liquid such as brine or a water/ethylene glycol solution, connections 13 being provided for supplying liquid displaced from the cushions to a header arranged above the tank. The latter is provided with rows of cooling tubes 10 extending between headers 11, 12, has a sloping bottom 5 and an outlet 6, and may be used in the freezing and thawing of sludges for facilitating precipitation therefrom. The tank may be cylindrical or spherical in which case a one-piece membrane is employed.</p> |
