A nickel oxide coated nickel electrode incorporating lithium to lower the resistivity of the nickel oxide layer, as disclosed in Specification 725,661, is improved by further impregnating by a solution containing both a lithium salt and a nickel salt and heat-treated to produce further nickel oxide, preferably at temperatures between 350-450 ‹ C. The initial heating step can be between 500-700‹ C.
