A window actuator 10 is used to open or close a light 12, which may be a roof light in a public building. The light 12 is hingedly connected in a conventional manner to a fixed frame 14. The actuator comprises a piston and cylinder 16, 16a, 16b pivotally connected to the light 12 through a first pivotal arrangement 18, and pivotally connected to the frame 14 through a second pivotal arrangement shown generally at 20. The second pivotal arrangement includes a bracket 26 fixed to the frame 14, and an intermediate member 24 pivotally attached to the bracket 26 at the axis 28. The cylinder 16a is pivotally attached to the intermediate member 24 at the pivot axis 22. When the light 12 is fully closed, the axis 21 comes into coincidence with the axis 28.
