The invention relates to a device making it possible, by the absorption of kinetic energy by virtue of the deformation of one of these elements, to exert an even, continuous braking load of adjustable intensity. It consists of a tube (1) in which there slide, in opposite directions, two rectilinear elements (4) and (5) which are fixed respectively to each end of the tube on a special piece (2) and on a stop (3). When a tensile load is exerted on the rectilinear elements (4) and (5), the stop (3) to which the rectilinear element (5) is fixed immobilises the tube, whereas the special piece (2), entrained by the rectilinear element (4), deforms it (crushing or cutting) over its entire length. The device according to the invention is particularly intended to equip metal or textile nets the purpose of which is to retard, until they are brought to rest, falling rocky masses or vehicles which have lost control. <IMAGE>
