A process and appts. for heat treating fine grained material such as cement raw material are claimed in which the material is preheated in a multistage cyclone preheater, pre-calcined in a firing chamber and almost fully calcined in a mixing and reaction reactor, the calcined material is finish fired in a rotary kiln and cooled in a cooler, tertiary air is fed in two sub-streams from the cooler to the firing chamber, the firing chamber off-gas and pre-calcined material are fed into the reactor, a first sub-stream of the tertiary air is used to entrain the pre-heated material into the firing chamber and the second sub-stream of tertiary air is fed as pure combustion air to the firing chamber.
