In prodn. of a plant substrate from clay, homogenised, stored clay is comminuted and sieved to pieces of size between peas and nuts, the sived pieces are heaped up, the heap is mechanically turned over several times, and the particles are finally calcined. Water, esp. 3-8% may be added to the heap while it is being turned over. USE/ADVANTAGE - The substrate is used in aquaria. Plants can grow through the substrate, and fertilisers can be added.
