Quick change chuck for rotational tools - has centralising balls caged in chuck sleeve and clamping between tool and tapered grooves in spindle bore

The chuck sleeve (8) fits into the bore (7) of the spindle nose (4) and can be pushed fully inwards against the pressure of spring-loaded plunger (19). Two rows of centralising balls (11, 12) caged in radial holes (9, 10) in the chuck sleeve clamp between corresponding tapered ring grooves (13, 14) in the spindle nose bore and the tool shank (25). A grub screw in the spindle nose wall passes through a longitudinal slot in the sleeve and clamps onto a flat machined on the tool shank to transmit the cutting torque. To insert a tool the chuck sleeve is first forced fully upwards, allowing the centralising balls to move outwards into the large of the tapes grooves. When the tool is inserted and the chuck sleeve released the balls close onto and centre the tool. Finally the grub screw is tightened. USE/ADVANTAGE - Chuck sleeve has few parts and is cheap to produce.
