PURPOSE:To improve performances, especially strength and flexibility required for a heat-resistant expandable member used as a holding material, etc., for a monolithic catalyst made of honeycombs constructing catalyst converters of low-pollution engines and provide the heat-resistant expandable member excellent in surface protective performances such as prevention of falling off in handling. CONSTITUTION:Organic flexible films (2B) and (2B) are coated and formed on both the front and the back surfaces of a heat-resistant expandable member (2A) produced at a blending ratio of 25-54.9wt.% inorganic fiber material such as ceramic fiber or slag.rock wool or sepiolite mineral with 45-70wt.% unexpanded vermiculite having bivalent cationic groups and 0.1 to <5wt.% organic binder having vinyl acetate groups according to a papermaking method.
