PROJECTION TYPE DISPLAY DEVICE

PURPOSE:To provide the projection type display device which is not increased in size by utilizing liquid crystal devices having diffusion modes, such as scattering mode and deflecting mode. CONSTITUTION:The projection type display device having a single illuminating device or the illuminating devices provided for each of image light rays and a projecting lens and the liquid crystal devices provided for each of the image light rays have a diffusion function body for selecting the transmission mode to allow the transmission of incident light as it is and the diffusion mode to change the progressing direction of the incident light according to image signals. In addition, the diffusion ability in the diffusion mode has directivity. These devices are so disposed that the above-mentioned diffusion ability is stronger in the direction perpendicular to the direction where the diffusion ability is proximate to each other than in this direction.
