Preparation of a phosphatidic acid derivative comprises transesterifying another correponding derivative in which R (the ester group) is derived from choline, ethanolamine, glycerol or serine with a compound of the formula ROH, in the presence of phospholipase D; and subjecting the phosphatidic acid derivate to deacylation.
