The cable (12) is secured in an opening through a wall (6) with a hexagonal nut (5) on one of two threaded sections (3, 4) of the coupling (2). The opening is sealed with a ring (7) between the nut (5) and wall (6). The slightly tapered coupling (2) extends into clamping blades (8) around a ring (9) of elastomer which is lined (13) with grains (14) e.g. of sand, ensuring a firm grip on the cable (12) when the nut (11) is tightened and the ring (9) compressed. The lining (13) may be either continuously cylindrical or in the form of a number of separate small spots of the granular material adhesively bonded to the inside of the ring (9).
