The holder for a catalyst in a housing (2) in the exhaust line (11) of a liq. fuel engine prevents gas by-passing the element. It comprises at least one corrugated layer of fine metal wire mesh, with at least one longitudinally extending recessed portion (9) for an annular sealing strip (10a,b). The recessed portion is formed by a smooth part of the mesh, whereby the seal is pref. formed by a strip above and/or below, or between the smooth wire mesh portions. The strip thickness may be equal to or less than the height of the corrugations.
