Broken expanded clay granule scrap recovery - by mixing with clay suspension and firing giving prod. useful e.g. for plant substrate, filter or insulation

Working up scrap from broken expanded clay granules, esp. as plant substrate for expanded clay granules suitable for long-term watering of plants, is carried out by mixing the scrap with a liq. clay suspension in a mixer and firing after discharge from the mixer. Mixt. is treated with a water binder, pref. a thickener. Before firing, the mixt. is covered with dry clay powder and may be moulded and dried relatively slowly before firing. Firing is up to 1200 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prod. looks attractive, since black core of the fragments is disguised. It is light and very open-pored. Used as plant substrate for long-term watering, as soil improver, as filter material and for (thermal) insulation, may also be moulded to filter stones, plant pots etc. with good air and water permeability
