An optical communications system includes at least one transceiver arranged to provide two-way communication over an optical communications channel, such as an optical fibre. The transceiver comprises a semiconductor light source 4 to provide optical signals for transmission via the fibre 5, and a detector 7 for detecting optical signals received via the fibre. Between the semiconductor light source, which may be a laser, and the detector, there is an optical filter 3 which is substantially opaque at the operative wavelength of the light source. The light source may have a band gap of less than the photon energy of the received optical signals. Complementary transceivers may be provided at either end of the optical channel for simultaneous bi-directional transmission at, for example, 1300 and 1500mm. |
