The coin-operated machine (1) carries a frontal infrared detector (2) with an integrated electronic component for evaluation of movement pulses. A time switch clock (3) exercises time dependent functional control of the device e.g. as an alarm clock. The solar power supply (4) is backed up by a storage battery. An acoustic generator (5) produces an alarm signal when an intruder approaches within e.g. 50 cm. Alternatively an ultrasonic echo detector may be used for surveillance. ADVANTAGE - Breakage into the machine is effectively prevented and the intrusion is recorded and signalled without particular technical or economic difficulty.
