Transmission drive with periodically changing ratio - has eccentric gear timing and variable transmission element

The transmission translates a constant drive into a periodically variable ratio drive. The periodic variation is obtained by two gear trains with selected eccentricity, the outputs being combined by a third train. The latter is variable to vary the overall gear ratio of the system. The principle can be operated in either direction. For manually propelled vehicles the periodic torque supplied by the operator is changed into a constant drive. Alternately, a constant drive is changed into a controlled periodic drive, e.g. for artificial heart pumps. The selection of the eccentric elements controls the periodicy.
